The Man Who Came to Dinner HELD OVER November 20 and 21

Take one self-centered internationally known speaker, have him slip on the ice and break a hip just as he is about to enter a home for dinner, and you have the perfect recipe for classic screwball comedy.

"The Man Who Came to Dinner" by George S. Kaufman and Moss Hart comes to the Workshop Theatre stage beginning November 7 and running through November 19. Box office opens for members Wednesday, October 29, and for non-members on Monday, November 3. Call 799-6551 between noon and 5:30 pm for tickets.

Written towards the end of the "screwball" comedy era, The Man Who Came to Dinner, directed by Ann Dreher, continues that tradition in which seemingly normal people get caught up in oddball, hysterically ludicrous situations.

The man of the title is Sheridan Whiteside, a famous orator and infamous windbag, played by Hunter Boyle. Others featured in the cast are Jack Lunan and Malie Heider as Mr. and Mrs. Stanley, the unfortunate hosts whose lives are turned topsy-turvy by Whiteside's extended visit; Emily Davidson as Maggie Cutler, Whiteside's devoted secretary; Barbara Lowrence Hughes as Lorraine Sheldon, glamorous actress; Steven Thomson as Beverly Carlton, British playwright; Catrina Maisonet as Nurse Preen: Jeremy Gingrich as Bert Jefferson; and Dave Reed as Banjo.

When Whiteside threatens to sue the Stanleys for his unexpected fall, the couple go out of their way to accommodate his outlandish wishes. Result? Total pandemonium.

Jean Caughman Smolen is producing. Ann Burns is stage manager. Susan Jones is costuming the show. David Swicegood will provide hair and wig designs. Walter O'Rourke is set designer. Randy Strange is scenic artist, and lighting is by Barry Sparks. The show is sponsored by an anonymous donor in honor of the Richland Northeast High School Palmetto Center for the Arts Department of Drama.
