ALERT:  Members of our staff have received inquiries about the classes titled "Broadway Bound" that are being offered by Southern Strutt this summer. Please note that, despite the duplication of our program's name and the involvement of an instructor who has taught for Workshop Theatre, these classes are in no way connected to the Broadway Bound musical theatre company at Workshop, which is now in its second decade.

Now in its second decade under the direction of founder Dedra Daniels Mount, the Broadway Bound musical theatre company is one of the educational offerings of Workshop Theatre. Since its inception in 1999, Broadway Bound has become a successful avenue for educating young people in dance and voice for musical theatre, while also providing performance opportunities for these young artists beyond standard theatrical productions. The company's participation in regional competitions gives its members the chance to be critiqued by professional judges, at the same time promoting a sense of team unity. And – perhaps most important – the members of Broadway Bound serve throughout the year as "performing ambassadors" for the theatre.

Auditions

Auditions are required for Broadway Bound and are offered each summer in the form of "Monday Masters" classes in dance for musical theatre, voice and improvisation games. Members of the preceding year's company must re-audition for Broadway Bound each year. As it becomes available, information on the "Monday Masters" sessions is posted on the Courses page.

Tuition & Fees

Broadway Bound teams of 10 to 15 members meet once a week for 90 minutes, and monthly tuition is $45. Teams with less than 10 members meet for 60 minutes a week, with a monthly tuition of $40. (Monthly tuition for a “junior team” that meets for 30 minutes a week is $30.) [Tuition for Broadway Bound teams is actually an annual fee that is divided into nine equal installments. A full month’s tuition is due and payable on the first class of each month, September through May, regardless of the number of classes offered during the month.]

“Hands down, Broadway Bound is the reason I was prepared to be in How the Grinch Stole Christmas in New York City. The singing and dancing at Broadway Bound is the same as real actors are required to do in real Broadway musicals!

– Jordan Samuels, Member of Actors’ Equity

Private ($125/month), duo ($70/month), trio ($45/month), quartet ($40/month) and quintet ($35/month) dance classes are available for company members, as well as group classes in ballet/contemporary ($50/month).

Voice lessons are also available as follows: private ($75/month); duo ($65/month); trio ($45/month); and quartet ($40/month).

Company members who are enrolled in a private, duo, trio, quartet or quintet class may choose to compete in the appropriate categories at the competition being attended by the company. However, they will be responsible for paying their own competition fees for these additional entries.

Attendance

The Broadway Bound teams will attend one regional competition in the spring, either in Columbia or "out of town" (e.g., Charleston; Spartanburg, North Carolina, Georgia) and will present an end-of-the-year showcase. [The company director will survey the company members and their parents to determine the best possible dates (of those available) for competitions and the showcase. Participation in the competition and the showcase is mandatory. Notification of intended failure or actual failure to participate in either of these events will result in immediate expulsion from the company.] Each company member will be allowed four "unexcused" absences from class. All other absences must be accompanied by a physician's excuse; proof of a family emergency (e.g., death in the family, house fire); or a holiday (e.g., Rosh Hashanah) that is not already covered by public school calendars.

“Broadway Bound definitely prepared me for college and life as an aspiring actress in New York City...
Dedra Daniels Mount's love and knowledge of musical theatre make Broadway Bound a joy to be a part of, and the many lessons I learned
from her remain invaluable during my pursuit of a career in theatre."

– Lori Wheat

A limited number of extra rehearsals will be called throughout the year. [While attendance of these rehearsals is not mandatory, company members will earn one additional unexcused absence from class for every two extra rehearsals they attend.]

Costumes

Although every possible effort will be made to costume Broadway Bound numbers from Workshop Theatre costumes, members’ closets, etc., all competition members will be expected to purchase certain items (e.g., jazz shoes, jazz pants, leotards) if needed. [Members in private, duo, trio, quartet or lyrical classes must be prepared to pay the entire cost of competition costumes if necessary.]

All company members must purchase a company T-shirt ($12-$14) that will be worn for certain events.

Behavior

Because the nature of musical theatre allows for participants of all physical types, ability levels and backgrounds, all company members are expected to be respectful of one another’s attributes as well as their shortcomings.
