Staging Musical Theatre from the Ground Up!

Using existing musical theatre numbers, participants will write their own show…which will be presented for family and friends on the final day of the camp.


Let's Audition

Professional actress and instructor will provide information, tips and “definite don’ts” for aspiring performers. In a relaxed environment, participants will learn about audition preparation – from the questions they should ask to their attitude…and how to conquer those butterflies that hit even the most experienced performers!


Acting for the Camera
When: June 15-19, 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
Instructor: Monica Wyche
Target Audience: Grades 6-9
Cost: $150 ($135 if paired with "Let's Audition" for a daylong camp - That's five full days of creative fun for only $285!)

This camp will cover the basics of acting and performing for the camera, teaching some of the tricks of the trade that are involved with performing for film.


Creative Drama and Movement

Campers will be introduced to the world of drama through movement exercises, expressing ideas through creative movement, theatre games and pantomime exercises.


Sketch Comedy and Film Shorts

From Second City to Saturday Night Live, this weeklong laugh-fest will focus on writing original comedy sketches for stage and screen.


Hansel and Gretel in the Big Woods
When: July 13-17 and 20-24, 9:00 a.m. - 12:00

Campers will start off on a funny and fantastic journey into theatre with the play Hansel and Gretel in the Big Woods.  Participants will learn basic acting skills such as projection, simple movement, memorization and pantomime. Not only that, they will learn how to work together as a team and learn about such things as comic timing and how to be compassionate -- all in one small play! This two-week camp will culminate in a hilarious performance by your children!


Dance Like Workshop's High School Musical 2 (Grades 3-5)

Have you been looking for a way to grow as an actor?
If you've been looking for a class in which to practice and explore your acting in an environment that provides constructive feedback and direction, this class is for you! This class is designed for acting students with all levels of experience. It is a workshop-style class that will help the actor learn to develop powerful, believable characters for stage and film that will affect the audience. Students will learn about identifying and generating emotions, accessing their own experiences to strengthen characters, creating multi-dimensional characters, stretching by playing characters that aren't their "type," solving acting problems, developing fully worded objectives, and developing character stories. The class will work with acting and emotion exercises, scenes and monologues (from plays and films) to explore character development. Some of the work will be videotaped. (Textbook for the class is available for $14.95. Recommended, but not required. Instructor will have the books available.)

ONE-DAY WORKSHOPS

I've Always Wanted to Try Acting

Have you always wanted to try acting, but weren't sure how, or whether you would even like it? Not quite ready to sign up for a multi-week class? This workshop is for you! The three-hour workshop is designed to give students a brief introduction to acting. Students will learn some basic acting concepts and participate in acting exercises. Students will also learn about ways to get involved with local theatre, and what to expect at auditions/rehearsals. This is a no-stress, fun way to "get your feet wet" in acting/theatre.

"Help! I am nervous at auditions, and I want to get cast more!" Here's your answer:
This one-day workshop is designed to help the student improve audition techniques. An experienced director will help students learn to be confident when auditioning for plays or television. Vocal techniques, stage fright, script analysis, how to prepare, and advice on standing out in a crowd will be covered. Students will go through a mock audition and will be directed on ways to make improvements. Students will also "get into the mind of a director" to learn about what directors look for at auditions.


British Dialects
When: Saturday, July 25, 10:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Do you worry about roles that have dialects? Increase your range as an actor...
This class is designed for actors and/or speakers who would like to improve their ability to eliminate the "southern" dialect and be able to pick up other dialects with ease, focusing on British. Students will learn the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is an alphabet of sounds.  A knowledge of this system enables students to identify the sounds of different dialects, and to either eliminate or change dialects as needed for various roles.  Students will learn the basics of how dialects work and will practice both upper- and lower-class British dialects. Workbook included.  A must-have for any serious acting student!


Tuesday Tapping Intensive

Working with versatile instructor, director and choreographer Dedra Mount, Director of the WT School of Performing Arts, performers ages 5 to 18 have the chance this summer to take “master classes” in dance for musical theatre, voice – and fun! Classes are open to all levels of experience and ability. No two sessions will be alike, and the sessions will not build upon one another. So you can sign up for any number of sessions and any combination of sessions – it’s up to you!

The “Monday Masters” sessions will also serve as auditions for Workshop Theatre’s 2009-2010 Broadway Bound program, an award-winning musical theatre company for young people now entering its second decade in the Midlands!

Note: “Monday Masters” participants may choose not to be considered for membership in Broadway Bound.

ReWired

"Make 'Em Laugh" - Improvisation & Sketch Comedy

June 20 * July 18 * August 15 (ADDED DATE!!) * August 29 (FINAL ADDED DATE!! Note: The Aug. 29 session will be held at Workshop's new School space at 635 Elmwood Ave.)

This workshop will be offered from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Led by ReWired director Vicky Saye Henderson, participants will learn the secrets of improvisational acting as well as the basics of sketch comedy writing.  Explore how to think quicker on your feet, avoid the dreaded “brainfreeze” and courageously go wherever the story or game takes you!

The “Make “Em Laugh” workshops will also serve as auditions for ReWired, Workshop Theatre’s improv comedy team for young people.

Note:  Participants of this workshop may choose to not be considered for membership in ReWired.

$30 per person
($25 for current members of ReWired)

Summer at Workshop Theatre:  We're so hot - it's cool!

 

A $45 deposit per camp, class or workshop is due at registration. The remainder is due by the first day of camp/class. (If the cost of a class or workshop is less than $45, then the total cost is due at registration.)

A 10% discount is available on the second and subsequent camp, class or workshop for families with more than one student, and for students taking more than one camp.

Minimum enrollment for all camps is 5 participants.
(NOTE: Minimum enrollment for "Musical Theatre From the Ground Up!" is 6 participants.)

Workshop reserves the right to remove participants from any classes due to behavior problems.
